Dendrobates azureus is found in the forests surrounded by the Sipaliwini savannah in southern Suriname and Brazil. It is a mainland animal, but stays close to water sources. Besides being large (4-5 cm) and visually appealing, D. azureus is both a hardy frog and easy to breed. They are highly recommended for beginner hobbyists, especially given that they are extremely bold. They are somewhat aggressive frogs, and are best kept in pairs. Parents are from 2 of 4 independent lines.

D. Leucomelas (F1)

(Bumble Bee Dart Frog)

$35 per froglet: ~10 available

$20 per tadpole: Sold Out

Dendrobates leucomelas are found in the neotropical region in northern South America. Their range includes Venezuela, northern Brazil, Guyana and southeastern Colombia.  They are 3-4 cm.  They are not shy, and spend time both on the ground and climbing in the foliage.  They are hearty, mature very quickly and are easy to breed; a great beginner frog.  Males call with a distinctive and pleasant trill. Parents are from 2 independent lines.

D. Auratus

(Green and Black Dart Frog)

$20 per froglet: ~5 available

$10 per tadpole: Sold Out

Dendrobates auratus can be found in Central and South America, from Nicaragua and Costa Rica to southeastern Brazil and Bolivia. They were also introduced in Hawaii by humans, and have flourished there.  These are the Panamanian morph.  D. Auratus are 3-4 cm, very hearty, mature quickly and are easy to breed.  They are a common frog for beginners due to availability and cost.  However, it should be noted that these are shy frogs, and we recommend starting out with more bold varieties (such as azureus, tinctorius, leucomelas) which make better display specimens and will be more satisfying for the beginning hobbyist.

R. Ventrimaculatus

(Blue legged French Guiana yellow morph)

$35 per froglet: ~20 available

This is a thumbnail species, ~1.5 cm in length full grown.  Husbandry is of intermediate difficulty, so we do not recommend them for the beginning hobbyist.  However, relative to many thumbs, they are easy to care for and breed readily making this a good first thumbnail variety to own.  The French Guiana yellow morph is the most common in the hobby. Although often separated into "blue leg" and "gray leg", these are not true morphs but rather just variation within the morph.  Unlike many of the larger denrobates species, vents do well in groups.  They are arboreal in nature, and vertically-oriented vivariums work best.

D. Tinctorius (Suriname Cobalt)

$40 per froglet: 2 available

D. Azureus (F1)

(Blue and Black Dart Frog)

$45 per froglet: ~10 available

Also known as the dyeing dart frog, d. tinctorius are large (4-6 cm), bold, hardy, and easy to breed.  They spend most of the time close to the forest floor, in the front of the aquarium.  Tinctorius come in many color varieties.  The Suriname cobalt (from Suriname) is popular in the hobby due to its striking coloration.  Combined with their size, boldness and hardiness, cobalts make an excellent species for both the beginning and experienced hobbyist alike.

P. Vittatus

$40 per froglet: ~20 available

Overstock SALE: $60 for 2

Phylobates Vittatus is from western Costa Rica.  It is a bold, hearty species and makes a good beginner frog.  Males frequently make pleasant and easily audible trills.  P. Vittatus will except a variety of food items, including bean beetles and small crickets despite their moderate (~3 cm) size.  They are prolific breeders with large clutch sizes.

E. Anthonyi - Santa Isabel

$50 per froglet: ~10 available

Epipedobates Anthonyi is a medium-sized dart frog (~2.5cm) from Ecuador. The Santa Isabel morph is cherry red with lime green stripes. They are quite bold and males frequently make pleasant and easily audible trills. They do well in groups and are prolific breeders with large clutch sizes. However, raising healthy, colorful froglets is relatively difficult, and we thus classify husbandry of these frogs as intermediate difficulty.  The parents are from two independent high red lines, females are 2009 European imports.

Adelphobates Galactonotus - Lemon Morph

(Yellow Splashed Back Dart Frog)

$40 per froglet: ~7 available

The splashed back dart frog is a good-sized dart frog (~4-5 cm) from the Brazilian tropical lowland forests south of the Amazon river.  They are bold and do well in groups.  Breeding can be sporadic for this frog with unexplained lapses, although so far our trio has been breeding 2x per week since they reached adulthood except for a few month winter break. Our parents have solid lemon yellow on their backs, and solid black on their legs and bellies. All-in-all a vibrant addition to any frog collection!

Hyloxalus Azureiventris
(Sky Blue Dart Frog)

$40 per froglet: 2 available

Azureiventris is one of our favorite species of dart frogs.  They are medium sized, brilliantly colored with spotted sky blue bellies and variable metallic teal/yellow/orange stripes. These frogs are rarely seen in the wild, hiding among rock piles and caves in E. Peru.  However, they are relatively bold in captivity.  They like to sleep in the foliage at night and pear from hideouts near the substrate during the day. Their call is similar to leucs, but much longer.  Our frogs are from the Stewart line of INIBICO imports.
