Dendrobates auratus can be found in Central and South America, from Nicaragua and Costa Rica to southeastern Brazil and Bolivia. They were also introduced in Hawaii by humans, and have flourished there. These are the Panamanian morph. D. Auratus are 3-4 cm, very hearty, mature quickly and are easy to breed. They are a common frog for beginners due to availability and cost. However, it should be noted that these are shy frogs, and we recommend starting out with more bold varieties (such as azureus, tinctorius, leucomelas) which make better display specimens and will be more satisfying for the beginning hobbyist.
